The Office of Communications and Marketing provides integrated marketing and communications services to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, and Virginia Cooperative Extension. Our staff has knowledge, experience, and specialized skills in a broad array of communications tools to build public support and understanding of the missions of the college, VAES, and Extension. They are members of national professional organizations that keep them abreast of major advancements in their field of expertise and the best methods to effectively translate research and program impact on national and global concerns. The group's priorities focus on the strategic initiatives of the entities we represent.
Staff members provide graphic design, illustration, layout, editing, proofreading, Web design, and project management services. Publications include a wide variety of pieces ranging from straightforward fact sheets to complex technical manuals and include full-color promotional materials, administrative reports, and other communications pieces for specific events and high-profile programs.
Media relations activities include producing news and informational articles, videos, social media, and other material to reach our various constituent audiences online, on-air, and in print. The media relations team seeks out stories and research to portray the many facets and strategic initiatives of the college, VAES, and Extension research and programs. These stories are available to the media and the general public through VT News and the college and Extension websites. Selected stories are distributed nationally. Media relations team members maintain relationships with reporters, editors, and producers to facilitate accurate reporting about the initiatives of the college, VAES, and Extension.

We can consult on long-term strategic plans, campaign development, or with determining key messages that succinctly and effectively convey your position. Our role is to manage communication between our institution and our audiences and stakeholders. Strategic management of communication helps bring our programs and activities to the forefront in the public’s mind as a credible source of information — one that knows the answers and can be trusted.
Web services include planning, coordination, and content development for clients on Web-based projects — including websites — and working collaboratively with CALS IT on the development of Web applications. Our team helps train faculty and staff on the use of Ensemble, the university’s Web content management system, and, when staff resources are available, collaborate on grant-based projects, acting as co-investigators for website needs outlined in grant proposals.
Communications writers and editors produce articles, news releases, Web and marketing copy, and other types of content to promote and publicize the research successes and program impacts generated by the college, VAES, and Extension, ensuring compliance with branding and style guidelines outlined by the university. As experts in legibility and readability, coherence, clarity, and audience-appropriate content, our team works to develop and edit text for a wide variety of print and Web-based materials.
